Good roof ventilation is a balanced intake-and-exhaust system, not any single vent type: cool air enters low through soffit vents and pushes warm, moist attic air out high through a ridge vent (or gable/turbine vents). An imbalance — plenty of exhaust with blocked or missing intake — is one of the most common ventilation mistakes and can actually make attic problems worse, not better.

Why ventilation is about balance, not just having vents

An attic needs a continuous flow of outside air to prevent two problems: summer heat buildup that bakes shingles from underneath and raises cooling costs, and winter moisture buildup from household humidity that condenses in a cold attic and can cause rot, mold, and ice dams (see how to prevent ice dams).
