How to tell which one you're dealing with

• Hand test at the window. On a cold or windy day, run your hand slowly around the window frame and where the sash meets the frame. A clear draft right there points to the window (seal failure, worn weatherstripping, or an aging single-pane unit).
• Hand test on the wall, away from any window. If you feel cold air or a noticeable temperature difference on an interior wall surface itself, away from any window or door, that points more toward insulation and air-sealing in the wall cavity.
• Check for uneven room temperatures. If one room or one side of the house is consistently colder despite having comparable windows to warmer areas, that's a stronger signal of an insulation gap specific to that area (rather than a window problem, which would usually affect that room's windows specifically, not the whole room evenly).
• Look at your attic insulation depth. Inadequate attic insulation lets heat escape upward, which can make upper-floor rooms feel drafty or cold even with perfectly good windows — this is an easy one to physically check yourself with a tape measure and a look in the attic.
• Consider a professional energy audit if the DIY checks are inconclusive — a blower door test and thermal imaging can precisely locate air leaks and insulation gaps that a hand test can miss.
